Corporate OverviewCynapsus is a specialty clinical development pharmaceutical company targeting diseases of the brain. Cynapsus has a lower risk Parkinson's drug candidate ("APL-130277"), which is a reformulation of an approved drug. APL-130277 is designed to address a much larger moderate to severe patient population, which represents close to 50% of Parkinson's patients. Cynapsus also has a proprietary formulation technology for cannabinoid drug candidates, which may be used to treat neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis and cancer, as well as for nausea/vomiting and appetite stimulation.Download Company Summary here.OpportunityProviding safe and effective new therapies for central nervous system disorders is considered one of the more promising areas within pharmaceutical development. Key success drivers include: (1) an increasing world population able and willing to pay more for safe and effective drugs; (2) a rapidly aging "baby boomer" generation, with an increasing prevalence of neurologic disease, and a longer life expectancy with disease; and (3) by 2011, patents covering $60-billion in drugs sales will expire, and as a result, biopharmaceutical company pipelines are in need of new drug candidates. StrategyCynapsus' strategy is to grow its portfolio of drug candidates through in-licensing and acquisitions, and to advance projects to Phase 2 proof-of-concept clinical studies. Once the drug candidates are sufficiently derisked, Cynapsus intends to out-license the programs to the appropriate pharmaceutical marketing partners for a combination of upfront, milestone, and royalty payments. Drug DevelopmentCynapsus is currently focused on the clinical development and commercialization of Relivar, potential treatment for neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis and cancer. Cynapsus employs a semi virtual outsourcing model comprised of a leading team of formulation developers, active pharmaceutical ingredient ("API") suppliers, regulatory and intellectual property experts, neuroscientists and central nervous system researchers. Cynapsus has a collaborative agreement with Montreal-based IntelGenx to co-develop Relivar. Relivar is subject to the typical pharmaceutical drug development process, including the pre-clinical and clinical phases (i.e. Phase I, Phase II and Phase III). Clinical trials have been, and will be, managed by CROs in Canada, the United States and Europe. Cynapsus and IntelGenx have been granted narcotic dealer’s licenses from Health Canada, which allows both companies to conduct research with controlled substances and to import and export controlled substances for research purposes. These licenses must be renewed annually. |
